(The Sea Stallion from Glandalough)
The model
I started
and completed building the model of the “HAVHINGSTEN” in 2023. The
construction drawings are similar to those used by the Viking Ship
Museum for the reconstruction of Skuldelev 2.
I have,
regarding details, relied on the many photos and film clips that the
Viking Ship Museum has posted on their website. In addition, I have
taken a number of pictures of the Sea Stallion during visits to the
museum.
My model
is built in scale 1:30 and is 100 cm long; 12.5 cm wide and 48.5 cm
tall including the mast.
For the
construction I have used pear wood and larch wood. All iron parts
are made of brass, which has then been "blackened" with a chemical
product.
Floorboards have only been laid on the port side in order to make
the construction structure below deck visible.
To get the
different desired dimensions of the ropes, I have laid them myself
with a small machine
All the
wood that was not painted was originally tarred and I have thus
treated it with a water-based product to give it a darker colour.
The upper
part of the hull and the sail are painted in the same colours as the
Viking Ship Museum's HAVHINGSTEN, which is inspired by the colours
used in the Bayeux tapestry.
The
detailed building methods and material used are more thoroughly
described in the accompanying texts for the image galleries. Most of
the photographs in the galleries were taken during the construction
process and not of the finished model.
