HAVHINGSTEN

Viking Longship, 1042

Details

This page shows a mix of pictures of some of the details from HAVHINGSTEN and some of the construction methods.

For example, you can see the mast partner (the solid timber on the deck in which the mast hole is located), as well as the keelson in the bottom of the ship where the mast is held when raised.

In addition, you can see the typical Viking ship side rudder on the starboard side (the “steering side”); wind vane; blocks; a horizontal piece of timber with two holes which fastened a boom that kept the foremost bottom part of the square ail in position when sailing up against the wind; and some details from the uncovered interior of the ship.

The coloured part of the outboard woodwork on HAVHINGSTEN is inspired by the motifs from the Bayeux Tapestry.

On the outer part of the oar hole plank you can see how the oar holes were closed with a small cover to prevent water from entering when the ship was under sail.
