Le Fleuron

French 64-gun frigate, 1729

Decoration Details

Although Le Fleuron was richly decorated as the ships of that time, it was less than the preceding century's war ships and references to the antiquity was also less pronounced than earlier. The original and still preserved designs for the decorations were made by J.-J. Caffieri.

On the model I have mainly used boxwood for the decorations. Boxwood is a hard and close-grained timber and thus ideal for carving and, in addition, it has a fine yellow colour. Where the background is black or very dark I have used ebony.
