NIELS EBBESEN

Danish frigate, 1943/45

Superstructure.

NIELS EBBESEN had several decks: the forecastle- and boat deck, the upper deck and the lower deck (mess deck). Above the forecastle- boat deck was a deck house with sonar and plotting room and the wheelhouse and above that an open bridge deck (covered around 1948-49) and topmost a 4 metre range finder/gun fire director.

The superstructure was, like the hull, made with steel plates with different thickness depending on where they were positioned.

Most of the elements that make up the model’s superstructure are made with balsa wood faced with styrene. This combination has the advantage that it is lightweight and fairly easy to work with.

As seen in the photo gallery, the elements of the superstructure, often an entire deck, are fabricated and more or less finished separately. I find it easier to work with details and apply painting on small units than when it’s all assembled.

The portholes are made from short brass tubes with a plexiglass rod to imitate the glass.

Hatches, hinges and wing nuts are made from styrene and as are the numerous lockers on the various decks. Most of them have a core of wood.
